Live from Birdland

You know that hole in the wall restaurant that serves the best such-and-such you've ever tasted? The place where you wouldn't know from lookin' that it's the best? The place that has the funky (bordering on ghetto) ambiance? That's us....Yep, we've got that market cornered in Birdland. We are the kind of funky/ghetto place that all the feathered friends around here are raving about. With a gourmet spread of grubs and worms, they don't seem to mind the glued together birdbath...

or the fixer upper that just went on the market...perhaps the most ghetto lookin' house on the block but not without its certain charm...

nor do they mind the gap in the top of the newly built birdhouses. I mean at first they were like, what the....?
But now, they're raving about how "green" their new buildings are. Waterproof air vent for the tight little space within. Brilliant really...
There was quite the drama between bluebirds and chickadees for this particular unit. The chickadees moved in and are now sitting on eggs.

Yesterday I learned something new and a little disturbing: a large brown bird, a cowbird I was told, landed on the house, started going into the hole but I shooo'd him away. My friend told me that they destroy the chickadee eggs and lay one of their own and leave. THEN, the chickadees will return and sit on the egg, and rear the baby cowbird. Dang....

This morning as I was making coffee, I saw, feeding all together on the ground, goldfinches, a Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker (crazy lookin dude--I had to look him up), Robins, sparrows, chickadees, and bluebirds. I'm telling you, we are the place! Ghetto goods and all...

We have perfect nesting areas under the edge of our roof tiles. But have always been disturbed by the number of baby birds that appear to fall out of the nests. Until we figured out that the crows are attacking the sparrow nests! A disturbing feature of nature for sure.
