that Extra Mile

I was walking on the beach the other day and came to the spot where I normally turn around. Only for some reason I decided to keep walking. You know, the extra mile---literally, and figuratively too as it turns out 'cuz you know what they say about going that extra mile...

Farrrrr off in no man's land where only the piping plovers play, I was humming a little tune, admiring rocks, watching for wildlife, loving the landscape stretched out before me wild and unbound. I walked and walked and....Suddenly before me there appeared the most glorious vision for a chick like me: a stick in the sand. And not any old piece of driftwood either. I'm talkin' foam and fiberglass my friends. That's right, a surfboard. (!!!)

I looked left, I looked right, I looked up the dune and out to sea. Nobody. Nobody for miles around. I rubbed my eyes and walked up to it slowly for fear that it would vanish like a mirage. But no. It was real and instant affection filled my heart. I picked it up, turned it over and saw that it had a broken fin. Awwww, I whispered. Lil Dude. A few gashes on the side and a chewed up nose but...not beyond repair. I scooped it up and carried it all the way back. Quite a jaunt but like anything, the harder you work at something the more satisfied you feel when you're done. I laid the board atop the car, strapped it down and stepped back to admire the scene. I drove home with a smile stretched ear to ear.

Shells, rocks, lobster buoys...a surfboard. Never know what'cha gonna find....especially when you go that extra mile.

Going the extra mile is always a good idea. I'm glad that it paid off with this little treat. Have fun bringing it back to life.
