Boston University

I have always felt that the action most worth watching is not at the center of things but where edges meet. I like shorelines, weather fronts, international borders. There are interesting frictions and incongruities in these places, and often, if you stand at the point of tangency, you can see both sides better than if you were in the middle of either one.

-Anne Fadiman, from The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

And so it is...with these words, with this book, that I again become a student. Next week, I begin my Masters of Social Work program at Boston University. "The Spirit Catches You.." is required reading for all incoming MSW students. It is about a Laotian refugee girl, her family, her American doctors, and the two cultures coming together. Having myself worked with refugee families, being interested in Eastern/Western medicine, and knowing that my brother Erik has spent the better part of the last several months in Laos, this'll be an interesting read on many levels. That this particular book is required reading, affirms for me that while I am moving in a new direction, I am also moving closer towards my Self. And that is a good feeling for anyone to have on the edge of something new...

Books and learning and lectures....bring it!

How exciting! I miss school in so many ways. Love that you have described this new phase as moving closer to your Self. Beautifully articulated and so true. Good luck with your newest journey Sara. Sending much love, peace and blessings your way!

Ah, yes those student years are coming back to me. It was a LONG time ago for me but I do remember the excitement of being around that community. I wish you well and great times together with your fellow students as you embark on this new phase of life. I am proud of you for embracing this with your usual gusto.
