Finally, it took a long time to upload this vlog. Our first week's adventure has been compressed into a delightful 3 minute and 42 second video. Erik and I took the train to Kandy, the capital of the hill country. We didn't stay long since Erik had already been there, and Sara and I will go back soon, so we hired a car and driver to Yala National Forest. Our driver, Lucky, arranged a tour guide the next morning for us at 5:00 am. Yala is on the southwest corner of the island, and is a government operated park. There were a number of other tour jeeps driving around the park as well, but it seems like the animals are pretty used to it for the most part. The tour was basically like driving around a big zoo with no cages. We jumped in the back of an old Land Rover and roamed the park and saw a lot of wild animals; three different kinds of eagles, a black-necked stork (which apparently is rare), four crocodiles, two different kinds of mongoose, and we saw fresh leopard and black bear tracks on the dirt roads. We saw other animals but after a while you get used to seeing elephants, monkeys, and oxen. It got hot and humid pretty quick so we were done with the safari before noon.
We decided to head straight for the beach. Originally, we had looked into an eco adventure tour that included caving, canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, and a 4 wheel-drive tour. We would have done all the afore mentioned activities in four days while camping at their "semi-luxury" camp. After they quoted the price we thought we could arrange our own tour for cheaper. But, as soon as we were done at Yala we were both ready for the beach. We went back to Hikkaduwa for some surf, and fun in the sun with good friends. It's not much different than our other beach weekends, but it was a lot cheaper, plus we got a lot of exercise surfing. For those of you who are wary of surfer dudes, try it, surfing is one of the hardest sports you'll ever love.
Erik and Leo's excellent adventure continues to Thailand early tomorrow morning. Sara will be at a two week training south of Colombo. Stayed tuned for more of Erik and Leo's Excellent Adventure, and find out if Sara will post as many blogs as she would like.
